Cold Weather Precautions
When Outdoors
• Dress in Layers: Wear several layers of loose, lightweight, warm clothing, including a waterproof outer layer, hat, mittens (warmer than gloves), scarf (to cover mouth), and warm socks/boots.
• Limit Exposure: Stay indoors as much as possible; take frequent breaks in warm shelters if outside.
• Avoid Overexertion: Shoveling snow or pushing cars can strain your heart; sweating can lead to chill.
• Protect Extremities: Cover ears, face, hands, and feet to prevent frostbite.
• Stay Dry: Change wet clothes immediately.
When Indoors
• Heat Safely: Keep your home heated, ideally to at least 65°F, and block drafts with weatherstripping/plastic.
• Never Use Appliances for Heat: Do not use stoves, ovens, or grills to heat your home due to fire/carbon monoxide risk.
• Vent Heaters: Ensure adequate ventilation for any space heaters.
• Check Alarms: Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
• Protect Pipes: Learn how to shut off water valves to prevent bursts.
Vehicles & Travel
• Winterize Car: Keep an emergency kit, check antifreeze, tires, and fuel.
• Minimize Travel: Stay off roads if possible during severe weather.
• If Stranded: Stay in your vehicle, run the engine for short periods, and ensure the exhaust pipe is clear.
Community & Pets
• Check on Others: Especially the elderly, young, or those living alone.
• Bring Pets Inside: Ensure pets have shelter and access to non-frozen water.
Recognize Cold Stress
• Watch for Symptoms: Reddening skin, tingling, numbness, pain, swelling, or shivering (a sign of hypothermia). Seek immediate warmth and medical attention if symptoms appear.
